Transalate for Last cookie - sorry bit 2 late

At this point in the Harry Potter film series, a great deal of viewers will have read all the books. And with good cause; Harry Potter isn't read with the same vapid proclivity as Twilight, it is read with passion. Passion for the depth of its characters, its painfully addictive and engaging narrative, and most of all, its heart. It really is transcendentally odd that The Half Blood Prince, the sixth Harry Potter film to emerge onto the big screen, should be... well, not better than its literary counterpart, per se, but damned close. It's also something of a black sheep. Readers will know that The Half Blood Prince is, by all accounts, the most sparse in the series. The film, quite rightly, follows suit. After the terrifying climax of Order of the Phoenix, wherein the wizarding world has finally had to accept that Voldemort (or "He Who Must Not Be Named", for the squeamish among you) has returned, having had a tense battle with Dumbledore, Harry, and both the young and old incarnations of the Order of the Phoenix. During this battle, Harry's godfather, Sirius Black (Gary Oldman), was killed by Bellatrix Lestrange (played with warped vigor by Helena Bonham Carter, or as she's also known, Tim Burton's wife). This battle took place after it was revealed that Harry is "the chosen one". Meaning that either he has to kill Voldemort, or Voldemort has to kill him.It is at this point that Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince commences. Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) and Dumbledore (Michael Gambon), having fought together for years as teacher and student, enter this new chapter as equals, as indicated by the very first shot: buffeted by wizarding press and the popping of flashbulbs, Dumbledore and Harry stand together, Dumbledore holding Harry reassuringly. London, it seems, is being terrorized by the newly freed Death Eaters. And not just Diagon Alley, the Puddle Lane-esque magical hodge-podge of secret skittering laneways and alleys which comprise the wizarding equivalent of Chinatown. Regular civilians are being harried daily, with fatalities escalating. The film, much like the book, has to contend with two fairly substantial narrative strands. The first is the quest undertaken by Harry and Dumbledore, played out with a wonderful master/apprentice dynamic, by both actors respectively. The second strand, and one that could have misfired terribly (but thankfully didn't), is that of teenage love.Honestly, there are so many spinning and whirling romantic entanglements in this film that you'd be forgiven for checking the book, just to make sure that any of this actually happened. But it did, and frankly, the stretches of The Half Blood Prince which centre around everyday teenage angst and folly are executed brilliantly. Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) not only do a wonderful job of convincing you that they really are Harry's oldest, dearest friends, but they manage to be bloody funny in the process. Grint in particular has some tremendously well-played banter with Radcliffe, and his stint as keeper in the film's sole quidditch match (if you don't know what quidditch is, you're probably a lost cause), involving his jousting on (and off) the field with a chiseled young wizard who not only evokes a young Bruce Campbell, but is trying to evoke at Hermione, on and off the pitch. Ron is also being pursued by lunatics of the opposite gender, which irritates Harry no end, Harry is pining for Ron's sister Ginny Weasley (Bonnie Wright), who herself is necking profusely with Dean Thomas, which incenses Ron. All of this might sound dazzlingly pointless, but it offsets the impending drama and tragedy beautifully, and is carried out with genuine comedic ability and aided by a wonderful screenplay. So how does it compare to the book? Well, it's quite different in many ways, which is actually a good thing. Large portions of the book had to be omitted, which actually aided the progression of the tale. Not only does it chart some of the darkest times in the Harry Potter story, it does so tremendously well. At once subtle and stunningly goofy, the sixth year at Hogwarts for Harry is a tenuous and dark one. Whether aided by his friends, or hounded by his old adversaries (most notably Severus Snape and Draco Malfoy, played by Alan Rickman and Tom Felton respectively), our hero is proving to be more and more compelling every installment of the series. And the one ringing criticism of the Harry Potter films - that the kids can't act - can now be well and truly buried. From The Prisoner of Azkaban onwards they managed to grow in leaps and bounds, but they have now well and truly settled into their roles. What we're left with is a misty, opulent outing into the world of Harry; paced like a slow-moving drama, but peppered with heart. As Dumbledore put it, these are dark times. But, it should be noted, they're damned enjoyable times to watch.
